Genre: Fluff, Romance
A/N: Each chapter is a stand-alone and would each have a different pairing. Story based on the song by Tank entitled "Dong Le."
Summary: Rui is puzzled about Kim Heechul.
You don’t show any expression, except to smile slightly before turning around.
And that smile answers all my questions.
© For Rui, Heechul is probably the loudest man in their campus. In all aspects that is, he changes his hair almost every month, sometimes even every week. He wears red pants and pink outfits without a care about other people’s opinion; well, it seems like everyone loves him for it. He even puts on female clothes without hesitation whenever necessary. He hosts their campus' radio. He plays the drums in a band. He dances to any song he fancies. He sings without a care if his voice would crack or not. He acts in an exaggerating manner. He laughs his heart out. He says what he wants to say.
Yet it is weird how he never spoke more than one or two sentence to her, and the man is always poker faced too. Often, he would only give her a little smile and then move about.
‘You puzzle me a lot Kim Heechul,’ she thought while looking at the man and his Chinese friend high-five and hearing Heechul say “Yo! Wazz up my man? How ya doin’ Chinese bro?” in his infamous gangster English afterwards.
‘Well, it seems like the time has come for me to finally solve the puzzle,’ she and Heechul are laboratory partners actually. And now that the semester is coming to a close, their professor asked them to make a compilation of all the experiments they did and type down a detailed report about the three experiments they consider most interesting.
“Heechul-shii,” she called him when she was closer to where he was standing; now talking to some other men whom she can recognize as part of the band he was a part of.
“Ne Rui-shii?!” he turned to her sounding a bit surprised.
“About the laboratory project…”
“I was thinking we should be doing it today. Are you free?”
“Eh? That…” he paused a bit, probably thinking about his schedule. “Sure.”
“Great! Where can we make it? Can we do it in your house?” she asked and saw him gulp nervously despite the still unchanging expression on his face. “I brought my laptop here since we can’t do it in my house; my mom is doing another renovation.”
“But aren’t you? Ahh..”
“Oh! Don’t worry. I know some taekwondo so I can defend myself if ever you do something uncalled for. What now, Heechul-shii?”
“Okay,” the moment Heechul said the word she noticed his friends who were actually still there and watching them like some drama character smiled mysterious smiles towards her, they each patted the man on his shoulder.
“Hyung hwaiting!” Jungmo.
“It’s time.” Hankyung.
Afterwards, they all left. “Let’s go,” he motioned her to follow him to where his car was being parked and they rode off in awkward silence.
More or less 15 minutes after, he maneuvered the car to an apartment complex. She decided to break the silence by asking, “You live here?”
“Yeah. Sort of,” he turned off the car engine and got out of the car. He signaled for her to stay put and moved swiftly to open the door for her. ‘Surprisingly a gentleman,’ she remarked in her head.
“Thanks! With your family?”
“No. My family house is a long drive from school, so…”
“Ahh. That explains it,” she noticed him fumbling with the keys. ‘Is he nervous? Very different from the ever confident and narcissist Kim Heechul,’ she just continued looking at the man until he managed to finally open the door, he motioned for her to step in.
“Welcome, you can set-up your things there,” he pointed at the wide center table in the living room. “I’ll just get some books in my room,” she nodded.
When Rui was done setting-up everything, Heechul is still inside his room. He’s taking a while and she can hear him moving around a lot. It makes her wonder what he is doing.
“Heechul-shii?” she called out.
“Yeah?” he roared back, “I’ll be out now.”
When the man came out he had already changed to some comfortable clothes but was sweating a bit.
“Are you okay?”
“I am. Let’s start now? Or shall I get you a drink first?” he asked smiling a bit before disappearing to the kitchen. "I forgot to ask. What do you want to have?”
“Okay,” he smiled a bit again and went back to the kitchen.
He came back with a tall glass of iced tea for her, and holding a bottle of mineral water for himself. “Here.”
As they were doing the project, Rui continued observing how Heechul would act towards her. He was still the same, no signs of the loud Kim Heechul; though he’s been speaking more now. Probably because it is needed, or they won’t get everything done in just a few hours if they don’t talk to each other. She felt like they have gotten closer in a certain kind of way too, his face has been showing some expressions than the usual neutral look.
“Ne, Heechul-shii, you’re older than me, right?” she asked when they were finished with everything. Just proofreading and editing and they’re done.
“Yes. Wae?” he glanced at her a bit.
“Can I call you oppa?” She saw him bite his lips from forming a smile. “I feel like I’m disrespecting you or something?” she continued.
“Why now?” his poker face back again.
“We seem closer. And there’s something else I want to ask too.”
He turned to her on full attention; he was looking at her face but avoiding her eyes. “What is it?”
“Why do you act differently towards me? You’re not loud, you’re poker faced, and you only smile a bit. Why only to me? It’s been puzzling me.” she asked all at once. The semester is ending and she can’t let it end without her knowing the reason behind the man’s weird persona when he’s talking to her.
“Ahh…aren’t you hungry yet?” He tried shifting the topic and laughed awkwardly. “I’ll cook us dinner fast,” then he scrambled off to the kitchen. “Feel free to move around,” he hollered.
Sighing dejectedly, Rui decided to do as he said. Besides, she won’t be leaving without solving the puzzle that is Kim Heechul. She noticed that the room to his door was ajar, so she decided to take a peek.
She noticed that his room is actually very cute but still manly. Then she noticed a big box that seems to have been pushed haphazardly under the bed, like the person who pushed it in was in sort of a hurry. It piqued her curiosity so she tiptoed in and decided to pull the box slowly and carefully. Not wanting to make a noise or damage whatever is inside the said box.
She slowly opened the box, preparing herself for what she might see. What she saw didn’t surprise her, weirdly, for it was just the proof she needed to confirm her suspicion. Inside were portraits of her doing various things and showing different expressions. And she can’t help but smile. Though she wasn’t surprised, she was very touched.
“You saw it, huh?” She heard a voice speak. Heechul is standing at the doorstep with a little embarrassed smile on his lips. “You’re not surprised?”
“No. I had a feeling you liked me with the way you were acting. I just needed some proof.”
“I see you're a narcissist too," he laughed. "That solves the puzzle of me then? I like you. But, do you like me back?” he continued on straightforwardly.
'Now this is more like the Kim Heechul everyone knows.'
“Yeah, I do. But before I say anything more, answer this first, why do you have to act all meek and expressionless?”
“Because I heard you say you like guys who would keep you interested and guys who would keep you guessing. I figured you would notice me more than a lab partner if I’d act differently.”
“Oh. But I like you just the way you are Chulae.”
“Is that my new nickname?” she saw his face brighten up with a fond smile etched on his gorgeous face. “I like you just the way you are too Rui. No scratch that. I love you Rui.”
“I love you back Chulae,” she smiled back at him happily.
“Yeah~ baby girl!” he ran towards her and lifted her up, spinning her around a bit before letting her soft body slide down against his, arms still encasing her. When their faces were on the same level with each other, he gave her a peck on the lips. Another peck, and another peck, and another peck, then he kissed her deeply, in the loudest kind of way, the Kim Heechul kind of way.
‘Dong Le,’ understood. Now all the pieces of the puzzle are in place. Complete.
-Finally!!! Here it goes Musume-chan ruilian_thatsme
-Well, I dunno how you think about this. I was planning to write angst, but in the end, this is just what I had managed to do. I hope it's fine.
